Usually more than one force pushes or pulls on something at once — and what matters is who wins. Think of a tug-of-war:
A balanced tug-of-war and a flag sitting on a table are the same idea: lots of forces, but they cancel out, so nothing moves.
Set each team's pull. When they're equal the flag stays put — balanced. Make one bigger and a purple leftover force appears, dragging the flag towards the winning side.
