Earth and Space

Look up on a clear night and you are staring straight out into space. It is bigger than anything — and you are already flying through it! The ground under your feet is the surface of a giant spinning ball called the Earth.

Our Earth is not alone. A blazing star, the Sun, lights our days. A smaller ball, the Moon, circles round us. And the Earth itself is only one of eight planets travelling in great loops around the Sun. This little corner of space is our home.

Here is our neighbourhood. The Sun sits and shines on one side. The Earth is the ball we live on, and the little Moon loops round the Earth. Slide time forward and watch the Moon travel round us.

Your journey through space

Blast off with Day and Night, then explore the rest of the sky: why we get the seasons, how the Earth, Sun and Moon move together, why the Moon changes shape in phases of the Moon, and the whole family of planets in the Solar System.
