Jack Kilby

Jack Kilby (1923–2005) was a six-foot-six, softly spoken Kansan who invented the integrated circuit because he hadn't earned any vacation days yet. He joined Texas Instruments in the summer of 1958, and when the entire company disappeared for its traditional July shutdown, the new guy stayed behind in a nearly empty lab — and used the quiet to sketch the idea that put the modern world on a sliver of semiconductor.

The tyranny of numbers

The problem of the age had a suitably dramatic name: the tyranny of numbers. Transistors were wonderful, but a useful computer needed tens of thousands of them — each one hand-soldered to the next by a human being with a steady hand and finite patience. More parts meant more joints, more joints meant more failures; the industry was drowning in its own wiring. Kilby's insight, jotted in his lab notebook that lonely July: stop making the parts separately. Resistors, capacitors, transistors — make them all out of the same piece of semiconductor, already connected. No solder, no tyranny.

Honestly? A mess. Demonstrated on 12 September 1958, the first integrated circuit was a tiny sliver of germanium glued to a glass slide, with delicate gold "flying wires" looping above it like a miniature suspension bridge built by a spider. His bosses were sceptical right up until Kilby pressed the switch and a perfect sine wave wobbled across the oscilloscope. It was ugly, fragile, and utterly historic. Robert Noyce's flat, printable "planar" version a few months later made the idea manufacturable at scale — and between the two of them, the chip was born.

Proving it was useful — with a calculator

For years the world shrugged: neat trick, but who needs it? So Kilby's team built the demand themselves. Challenged by TI's boss to make something ordinary people would want, he co-invented the handheld electronic calculator (1967) — and, since it needed to print its answers, casually co-invented the thermal printer while he was at it. The calculator became one of the best-selling gadgets in history and dragged chip production volumes up until whole systems on a chip became thinkable. Invent the technology, then invent the reason everyone needs it: not bad for a quiet engineer from Great Bend, Kansas.

The modest giant

Kilby's modesty was as legendary as his height. When the Nobel Prize in Physics finally arrived in 2000 — forty-two years after that July — he seemed mostly embarrassed by the fuss. In his Nobel lecture he went out of his way to credit Noyce, who had died in 1990 and so couldn't share the prize, saying he was sorry Bob wasn't standing there with him. He liked to compare himself to the beaver in an old joke, gazing up at a huge hydroelectric dam: "No, I didn't build it myself. But it's based on an idea of mine."
